Hyundai Safety Ratings by Model

September 1st, 2022 by

Safety matters most of all, no matter what features or specifications a car may have. Every vehicle that enters the market is put through rigorous testing to ensure you and your passengers will be secure in the event of a collision or accident. Many Hyundai models from the current model year have the highest possible ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Let’s look at how recent Hyundai models perform in safety tests by these authorities and the overall safety ratings awarded to each vehicle.

Hyundai Elantra

The 2022 Elantra is a four-door sedan with a 201-horsepower turbo engine that’s also available in hybrid versions. This model won the IIHS Top Safety Pick, with special mention for the Limited trim level. This top-level version swaps out the halogen lights for LEDs with both low- and high-beam lights, earning it the best headlight rating of Good. As for the NHTSA, the 2022 Elantra got the highest overall five-star score. This included five stars for one of the most challenging tests, rollover resistance.

Hyundai Kona

The compact Kona SUV earned the highest possible overall Good rating from the IIHS. In addition, the IIHS has a separate rating system for some newer tests, and the 2022 Kona achieved the top rating of Superior for the new vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention test series. It also got the second-highest rating of Advanced for the vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention tests. The NHTSA awarded the 2022 Kona an overall rating of five out of five stars, and it scored a perfect five stars in every test except for the rollover resistance test, where it scored four out of five.

Hyundai Sonata

The Sonata comes in several exciting trim levels and can potentially carry a 290-horsepower engine on the N-Line model. Like the Elantra, the 2022 Sonata earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award, with a special recommendation for the Limited and Limited Hybrid. It earned the highest rating of Good in every crashworthiness test, and the two Limited trim levels come with LED projector low- and high-beam lights. As for the NHTSA, the 2022 Sonata earned five stars overall, partly from a five-star rating on the rollover and front passenger side crash tests.

Hyundai Venue

The 2022 Hyundai Venue earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award on Special Edition Limited (SEL) models with the Premium Package. This configuration of the Venue includes LED projector low- and high-beam lights. In addition, the 2022 Venue received four stars in the NHTSA tests.

Hyundai Tucson

The Tucson received special recognition from the IIHS, winning their Top Safety Pick+ award for the 2022 model. Headlights, in particular, determine whether a very safe vehicle wins the Top Safety Pick+ award or just the Top Safety Pick. The NHTSA awarded the 2022 Tucson four stars overall, with five stars in all side barrier and side pole impact tests.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is a midsize SUV that also won the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. This rating applies to models produced after July 2021 due to improved headlight availability that gives LED lights to all trim levels. As for NHTSA ratings, the 2022 Santa Fe earned the maximum score of five stars and a five-star rating in every test, barring the rollover resistance test, where it got four out of five.

Hyundai Palisade

The Palisade is excellent if you’d like a little more size and luxury over the Santa Fe. The 2022 Palisade received the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, which can only be won if vehicles have superbly effective headlights, usually requiring LED technology. The NHTSA also awarded the 2022 Palisade five out of five stars overall, with a five-star score in everything but rollover resistance, where it earned four stars.

Hyundai Santa Cruz

The 2022 Santa Cruz combines the Santa Fe’s general SUV build with all the advantages of a pickup truck, including a cargo bed. This debut model won the IIHS Top Safety Pick award on the SEL Premium and Limited trim levels, as these carry LED projector lights instead of halogen bulbs. As for NHTSA ratings, the 2022 Santa Cruz will likely be tested in the coming months.

Hyundai Nexo

The Hyundai Nexo is a hydrogen fuel cell sedan that also earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. Like the 2022 Kona, the Nexo earned the top score of Good in every crashworthiness and headlight test, plus the maximum rating of Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and the second-highest rating of Advanced for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. As with the Santa Cruz, the NHTSA has yet to complete tests on the 2022 Nexo.

Hyundai Ioniq

The all-electric Ioniq is back for the 2022 model year with the name Ioniq 5, and we’re still waiting on NHTSA results. This electronic vehicle is another winner of the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, and the SEL and Limited get the highest score of Good for the LED headlight lamps.

Why Hyundai Models Earn High Safety Ratings

Hyundai leads the industry with the most awards from IIHS tests among models with front crash protection and LED headlights. No matter what Hyundai edition you choose, whether 2022 or another year, you’re bound to get one of the safest vehicles of that year in its class. Hyundai vehicles have a long list of safety, security, and driver-assistance features, with standard forward collision prevention, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring as just a few examples.

The IIHS and NHTSA are constantly fine-tuning their safety standards. As a result, getting a new Hyundai rated a Top Safety Pick or five out of five means you’re getting the safest version yet, even if the previous year also earned the same rating.

No matter the trim level, all Hyundai models for 2022 include the latest safety innovations and are designed for stability in all types of collisions. There’s no better choice than a Hyundai if you’re looking for a well-equipped car that can keep you and your passengers safe.
